Square Enix open-world cyber magic parkour action-adventure game Forspoken has got another delay. Originally this was set to release in May of this year, then it was delayed to October and now it's been pushed back again to January 24.
Now that first delay was due to the development, making improvements, and further polishing the game. But this one is different. The game is being delayed for strategic reasons, namely to avoid competition.
The announcement said specifically as a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to January 24th 2023. All game elements are now complete and development is in its final polishing phase.
That's about as clear as they can make it without outright saying God of War. I'm kidding. The real big reason comes down to actually Square Enix themselves.
They have not one, not two, not three, four, or five, but six other games planned to release during the rest of this year. I think they just don't want to steal their lunch money between now and December.
They'll be releasing Valkyrie Elysium, NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, Harvestella, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, Star Ocean The Divine Force, and The DioField Chronicle. Some of that early gameplay footage has a pretty rough frame rate.
So, I'm happy they're taking this extra time to polish it as much as possible and make it as good as possible.
